Artist of the Week: Greg Cartwright
Greg Cartwright is a living legend.
For the past fifteen years, he has been “scaring the country folks of Memphis with [his] brand of sleazy raunch and roll” as the driving force behind The Compulsive Gamblers, Oblivians, Greg Oblivian & The Tip Tops, Reigning Sound and The Parting Gifts, as well as being an important collaborator to albums from The Deadly Snakes, The Detroit Cobras, ’68 Comeback and Mary Weiss of The Shangri-Las. Inspired by his fathers’ British Invasion records and the Memphis music scene, Cartwright mixes blues, rockabilly, R&B and soul music into gritty tunes sure to get your blood flowing.
The Oblivians’ track “Do The Milkshake” was featured in the Vapor music-supervised Nissan ‘Wheel’ ad, bringing the song’s energy and edge to the spot.
This is but one example of Cartwright’s talent – since the beginning of his career, he has released over twenty albums (not counting his collaborations and work as a producer), and continues to make new music.
Punk rock isn’t dead — it’s just lurking down in Memphis.
Through his many projects, Cartwright and his bands “pay tribute to the Ramones, the Sonics and the Stooges by creating their own sound of nostalgic ’60s garage punk with their use of lo-fi equipment”
— AllMusic Guide
“Greg Cartwright has become one of those near-mythical giants. His work as a founding member of the Compulsive Gamblers, Oblivians and Reigning Sound, various production credits and time spent with other bands has produced some of the most consistently reliable rock ‘n’ soul over the past two decades.”
–– The Daily Page
“Cartwright writes and sings with the conviction of someone for whom the “sha la la la lee” chorus of “Pretty Girl” perfectly expresses his disappointments in life, love, and music.”
