Artist of the Week: Ra Ra Riot

By mid-November, it’s official: winter is on its way, and it is undeniably cold outside.  Since we can no longer wander the streets and bask in the heat of the sun, those of us living in cooler climates are forced to find comfort in other places — comfort food, comfortable clothes, and comforting music.

Ra Ra Riot is comfort food for the ears — an orchestral indie pop band formed in Syracuse, New York in 2006.  The group is known for their energetic live performances and intricate layering of the traditional guitar/bass/drums with cello and violin in a way that soothes the musical soul.  Ra Ra Riot’s sophomore album, ‘The Orchard,’ was released in August to critical acclaim and the band is currently touring across North America in its support (you can catch them in Toronto on December 1st at the Mod Club).

Filled with lush soundscapes and brilliant instrumentation, it’s worth wrapping yourself up in Ra Ra Riot’s music this fall (and with a few free downloads below, it’s easy to get started!).  You won’t regret it.

Ra Ra Riot’s song “Boy” (RAC Mix) is also featured in this month’s edition of the Vapor Music iPhone app (alongside some other fantastic tunes), which you can download for FREE on iTunes.

Sounds Like:
“…a labor of love, but also, in its heartfelt outpouring, like it’s about love”.
— PopMatters

About:
“The Orchard is a mixed bag. It’s a more mature Ra Ra Riot we are listening to. The songs often take their time to develop, and stick with you…there is a lot to look forward to in the future.”
– Pretty Much Amazing

“….natural vocal talent reliably lifted Ra Ra Riot’s debut from pretty pop diversion into something that was altogether more touching and compelling, such a Herculean effort wasn’t necessary here: The Orchard is no less sweet or sentimental than its predecessor, but it’s a stronger, more complete record.”
