Artist of the Week: Metric + Juno Congrats!

Once a year, the Canadian music community gets together to celebrate the best our country has to offer at the Juno Awards.  Held this past weekend in St. John’s, Newfoundland, many of Vapor’s favourite artists were awarded Canada’s top musical honour, but none moreso than indie rockers Metric.  The band took home the awards for both Group of the Year and Alternative Album of the Year for their critically acclaimed ‘Fantasies’.  Fronted by lead singer Emily Haines, Metric has been taking the world by storm and gaining praise wherever they go, including winning CASBY and Indie awards, as well as a nomination for the Polaris Music Prize.  The band’s song “Gold Guns Girls” can be heard this summer on Global and ABC in the Vapor music supervised television series Rookie Blue, premiering June 24th.

“Metric co-founder and guitarist Jimmy Shaw also made mention in his acceptance that “there are so many amazing musicians in this room, and in my neighbourhood and across the country.'” (Spinner)  Many other Vapor favourites were honoured for their talents this past weekend, including:

– K’Naan, Songwriter of the Year & Artist of the Year
– Arkells, New Group of the Year
– Joel Plaskett, Adult Alternative Album of the Year
– Charles Spearin, Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year
– Bell Orchestre, Instrumental Album of the Year

We at Vapor would like to extend our congratulations to all Juno winners and nominees!

Sounds Like:
“A dreamscape of neon and methodized noise that scratches at the real, the sensorial, and the downright hallucinatory, and it’s all channeled into a big She-Ra sword brandished by Haines herself.”
— No Ripcord

About:
“Born to be a front woman, Emily Haines (who also moonlights as a charter member of the original Canadian all-stars Broken Social Scene) brings a sinister sexuality to Metric that is at once confident, whimsical, and potentially devastating.”
– Popmatters

“There’s nothing small or careful about Fantasies — it’s a full-on bid for pop glory and it’s a smashing success.”
– AllMusic Guide
