Artist of the Week: The Drums
Happy 2010! A new year means resolutions, and a fresh outlook on the twelve months ahead. Rising out of the ashes of December’s “Best of 2009” lists, January is a time to look forward to the new music sure to form the soundtrack to your year.
Now that we are a few weeks into the year, Vapor would like to introduce you to the band poised in the #5 position on the BBC’s “Sound of 2010” list showcasing emerging artists: The Drums. Hailing from New York City, The Drums are the next generation of summery surf-rock — guaranteed to get you through those winter blahs!
“We only write about two feelings – one is the first day of summer when you and all of your friends are standing on the edge of a cliff watching the sun set and being overcome with all of your hopes and dreams at once. The other is when you’re walking alone in the rain and realise you will be alone forever.”
Similar to: Surf rock, mixing the sound of 1960’s girl groups like the Shangri-Las with Joy Division-era post-punk.
“New York’s official Coolest New Band… the most contagiously energetic NYC band of the past 10 years.”
“Simultaneously dipping into the sounds of ’50s surf culture and Factory Records for inspiration (for reals), the result is nothing short of drive-with-the-top-down amazing.”
